Gelatin candy
viewed under
polarized light
makes a dazzling
display of
Photoelastic
fringes.
A bar of flexible photoelastic
plastic shows colorful fringes
when bent and viewed under
polarized light.
A transparent, plastic plate shows
photoplastic stress fringes
formed when plate was cured
during manufacturing.  This
happens when the plastic is
stress in uneven heating and
cooling or other applications of
stress during the curing process.
Typical plastic items such as
plastic hangers also show
photoelastic stress patterns
under polarized light.
Stress fringes can be
enhanced and channeled
into fixed patterns with
preformed pressed in
designs as seen in this
clear plastic plate that has
an embossed pattern in it
created during curing.
